Things you asked...
I love to read books but don’t know what kind of books should a 13 year old read? Please can you help me? Laura, 13, Chester.
Time to start rummaging around in book shops - there are so many briliant books you could enjoy! What to suggest really depends on what kind of things you're into...
If you're a brave reader who doesn't mind a few nightmares, why not try Darren Shan? He's just started a new series of books called the Demonata, all about Demons. Book one, Lord Loss, has just come out in paperback and book 2, Demon Thief is out now in hardback. And if you find you like Darren Shan, you can bite into his massive twelve book series about vampires, The Saga of Darren Shan!
If, however, girly books are more your thing, why not try Louise Rennison's fabbity fab series, The Confessions of Georgia Nicolson? There are six books, all full of the diaries of teenager Georgia's struggles with life, fashion, friends, and (of course) boys and they are all brilliant! Louise will have you laughing out loud... Why not start the series with book 1, 'Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging', before racing your way to '...then he ate my boy entrancers'?
And if you don't fancy either of these, why not try disappearing into another world with a bit of fantasy? Australian author Garth Nix has written what's sure to become a children's classic in his Sabriel Trilogy. Sabriel, Lireal and Abhorsen will sweep you into another world and leave you completely gripped!
My 10 year old son will not even pick up a book to read. Please help!
A lot of 10 year old boys don't want to try reading, often they would rather play football, or on their Playstations, and won't even give a book a chance. The trick is to get them to see that there are so many different types of books out there that there is bound to be something they will enjoy!
Why not look for books that are related to the things he likes? If he's in to films, spies and adventures, I'm sure he'd love the Jimmy Coates books. They star a teenage boy who wakes up one morning with some mysterious powers - is he really just a normal boy, or is there something more to him? The first Jimmy Coates book, Jimmy Coates: Killer, is out now and Jimmy Coates: Target is out in March.
If he's more into superheroes and comic books, why not try tempting him with The New Heroes: The Quantum Prophecy? This thriller is set in a universe where superheroes have been wiped out, until some children come along who can run really really really fast...!
Or if he's more into computer games, why not try some of Garth Nix's fantasy books? His Keys to the Kingdom series is perfect for young fantasy fans and your son could get to discover another world!
If all else fails, why not introduce him to books with titles that tie in to other things he'll love? Look out when a great film comes out, there are often books published around it, like the Narnia books published around the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Or look out this summer for a series of books coming out around the World Cup. Once he realises that books can be cool he won't want to stop reading!
I have read all The Princess Diaries' and Mary-Kate and Ashley and Jean Ure and Jaqueline Wilson books, and so I need help on what to read next.
Wow! You have been busy! Luckily there are lots more books out there that I think you're going to just LOVE.
Have you tried the Agent Angel series by Annie Dalton yet? These brilliant books are about Mel Beeby, an ass-kicking angel who finds herself at an Angel Academy trying to be the best angel she can. Of course, things go wrong all the time, but she has a lot of fun with her friends and going on some very cool missions! There's a whole series of books to collect so they'll keep you busy for a while, but best to start with book 1, Winging It.
You might also love the new series of W.i.t.c.h. books. These are all about five best friends who have very cool lives! Most of the time they're normal people, but then when the girls come together they become W.i.t.c.h! Five brilliant witches saving the world from evil! There are loads of books in the series, and each one comes with great comic book pages!
And don't forget, there are some great other types of books out there. Why not try reading some other types, take a look at the books mentioned above to find out about horror and fantasy too!
